MULTIAGE CLASSROOMS

A “multiage” classroom:

  • Is made up of children of different ages and at different stages of learning
  • Provides an environment where teaching and learning is based on the individual needs of students
  • Has a program that is developmental
  • Provides learning experiences that are appropriate to student’s stage of development
  • Encourages talent development, reduces competition.

 

THE CURRICULUM

  • Starts at a student’s level of readiness
  • Is developmentally appropriate
  • Grows with the student’s interests
  • Engages the student in activities that will develop thinking processes
  • Is success orientated
  • Encourages collaboration responsibility and cooperation
  • Links Domains and promotes enthusiasm for learning.

THE CURRICULUM IS

  • Based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards
  • Based on sequential skill development
  • Flexible yet highly structured to maximize learning experiences
  • Expanded to include all aspects of student development.

 

To meet the needs of all learners a variety of instruction strategies and formats are necessary.

This format is used to

GROUP INTERACTIONS

Grouping enables students to

·         Learn from each other

·         Develop leadership skills

·         Share materials, time and expertise

·         Develop independence, responsibility and trust

·         Provide support

·         Develop tolerance and acceptance

·         Develop listening skills

·         Foster team orientated work practices

·         Actively participate

·         Gain immediate peer feedback

·         Have increased opportunities for modeled behaviour.

Grouping enables teachers to

·         Target specific learning needs

·         Demonstrate and model skills

·         Provide effective organization through development of routines

·         Focus on specific assessment criteria

INDIVIDUAL INTERACTIONS

This format allows for one to one conferencing where:
